Editorial Staff – Generation.anglican.ca

The National Church is currently seeking young Anglicans, (approx. age, 18 – 26) to be on the editorial staff of the National Anglican Youth Website; http://generation.anglican.ca.

This is a new position and up to three people will be hired.

Each member of the editorial staff would be expected to work 8-10 hour per week on researching content, writing and posting articles, soliciting content and maintaining currency with contemporary youth and faith issues.

This is a part-time contract position for 7 months beginning May 30, 2008. Because the work is web-based, applicants can be from any part of Canada and hours are flexible to fit into existing work or study commitments.

Members of the editorial staff will:

  • Maintain the currency of the site through soliciting and editing articles, writing and posting new material in the website’s current sections, including (but not limited to) News, Question of the Week, Polls, Reflections and Humour.
  • Suggest and follow-up on exploring new themes/features
  • Monitor site usage and propose improvements to design and function
  • Recommend and assist in training new bloggers
  • Research on-line articles/reflections/resources and post these on the site in relevant locations
  • Maintain familiarity with issues relevant to youth, culture and faith

Applicants should:

Be currently involved in some capacity in the Anglican Church of Canada (parish, diocese or nationally) and have some familiarity with current issues, opportunities, practices and structure.

Have the ability to write in fresh, relevant and appealing ways on a diversity of issues related to youth and young adults (targeted to ages 14-30) and the intersection of youth, culture, faith and life.

Be available for training and semi-weekly editorial meetings (on-line) at mutually agreed upon times.

Be able to work approximately 36 hours per month (9 hours per week average, allowing for flexibility of that time within a given month and over the summer).

Applicants must have access to high-speed Internet and a computer with Windows XP or higher or Mac OS 9. The browser must be Internet Explorer 7 or above, Safari 3 or above or Firefox 2 or above or equivalent.

Research skills using a variety of media (both print and on-line)

Solid writing and editing skills

Ability to discern appropriateness of content for a national website and moderate blog comments and other postings as necessary

Ability to work independently and as a contributing and active member of a collaborative team

Demonstrated Internet and computer literacy, with a particular interest in interactive web-based tools (i.e. blogs, photo sharing, and message boards). Computer programming experience is not necessary, but editorial staff will be expected to learn how to use a web-based Content Management System (CMS) for posting directly to the Generation website. Basic training will be provided.

Demonstrated initiative, creativity and capacity to work with others to develop new ideas and plans.

Application is by:

  1. Letter of introduction and description of what specific skills and interests you bring (eg, music, justice issues, faith praxis, youth ministry, experience with or interest in particular social issues, etc).
  2. Resume of relevant work experience including jobs, church involvements, volunteer positions and specific areas of personal interest.
  3. Sample of writing (500 words or less) reflecting on a current issue relevant to youth and faith.
